If you’ve just bought a new home, congratulations are in order! Buying a home is a major accomplishment, and enjoying the new dwelling is exciting. While you can relax knowing you’ve handled all the purchase and closing details, there are still many tasks for a new homeowner to consider besides moving and unpacking. After signing the paperwork and receiving the keys, you’ll want to take steps to secure your home, set up utilities, and learn more about the community. These are the first things to do when buying a house.

Secure Your Home

Before moving into a new home, consider security. Changing locks, setting garage codes, and exploring security systems will ensure you have control over who enters your home. Examine all entry points and determine the steps needed to secure them.

Depending on your skill set, you may contact a locksmith to have locks changed or change them yourself. If you have an existing alarm system, you’ll likely need to reconnect the service or choose a new provider. Ensure you have a manual on hand to set codes for any electronic systems and ask your provider about any concerns regarding reprogramming.

Set Up Utilities

Setting up utilities before moving day will make your transition go smoothly. Contact local utility companies to ensure the previous owners have no outstanding debts and communicate the transition dates. Learn about any service setup charges or transfer fees and when they need to be paid to ensure service without interruptions.

Utilities to set up may include:

  • Water/Sewer
  • Electricity
  • Gas
  • Trash Collection
  • Internet and cable services

Other services may be available in your community. Ask your realtor or property manager about any services you’re interested in and who should be contacted to set everything up.

Establish Relationships with Neighbors

Becoming part of a new community is exciting. Building connections with neighbors creates a friendly atmosphere and establishes a support network. Take some time to introduce yourself to new neighbors and learn about the neighborhood.

Those who live around you can offer a wealth of information about anything that may be needed in the coming months. You may be able to get recommendations about local handymen, nearby restaurants, local entertainment, and more. Establishing a relationship with neighbors can also help by adding another layer of security to your home.

Get to Know the Property

Learn the essential things about your new home to ensure you know where everything is and how it works. Locate the circuit breaker switches and water shut-off valve and ensure you know how to use them when needed or in an emergency. If circuits aren’t labeled, take the time to add labels that describe their function.
